Tasty Tuesday and Sweet and Easy French Puffs

Hello there! It’s another Tasty Tuesday and today we have something simple and sweet to share, Sweet and Easy French Puffs!

My husband Troy makes these French Puffs once in awhile on weekends as a little extra sweet treat to go with breakfast! His mom made them when they were kids, and there is just something nostalgic and comforting in this little sweet treat!

I asked Troy if he could share what he likes about the French puffs. He said there were 3 things:

1.  They are homemade baked goods, everyone loves those.

2. They are homemade baked goods from scratch, which gives you bragging rights.

3. They are especially great when they are coming straight out of the oven.

What makes this little delight so amazing is that after it comes out of the oven and while its still hot, you are going to break every diet rule out there, and dip those babies in melted butter and then dunk them in cinnamon sugar! On Purpose! Oh yeah, we’re going there! Its French, after all! (Sorta)  And then you serve them up warm… this is essential… if no one is there with you, you may have to eat the whole plate yourself because they are so good when they are fresh and hot out of the oven!

For this post, I did the cooking and the photos, I am trying to learn a little more about photography, picking up pointers from my dear friend Maribeth, and my son Jake and my husband Troy. It is good to try new things!

So without further ado, lets begin!

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 egg lightly beaten
  • 1/3 cup melted butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/3 cup melted butter
  • Cupcake liners (optional- can also use cooking spray or grease muffin tin)

Makes 12 French puffs

Preheat the oven to 350°

Place cupcake liners in a muffin tin (or spray or grease the muffin tin)

Mix together flour, 1/2 cup sugar, baking powder, nutmeg and salt.

In a separate small bowl, lightly beat one egg.

Add in the milk and 1/3 cup melted butter.

Gradually add the egg mixture to the flour mixture and stir with heavy spoon.

When its fully incorporated, if desired, you can add in a tsp of vanilla. Notice the batter will be quite thick.

Fill the paper liners about 2/3 full

Bake for about 20 minutes. While its baking, get your sugar and melted butter ready for when they come out of the oven. In one bowl, put the 1/2 cup of sugar and 1/2 tsp cinnamon. In another bowl, put 1/3 cup melted butter.

Here they come! There should be only the slightest gold on the tops, you can do a toothpick test if you like.

Now its time to do the dip… this is seriously decadent.

Take a puff, and dip it in the butter, don’t rush this… let it linger a moment so that butter goodness can soak into the first layer of the French puff. This is a labor of love!

Time for a dip in the cinnamon sugar!

Make sure you get a good coating on there… its mixing with that delicious melted butter. This is where the magic happens. Honestly, if you choose to make these without the cupcake liners, you can do the entire puff in butter and cinnamon sugar… don’t tell your trainer. It’s just easier that way. Sometimes what happens in the kitchen stays in the kitchen.

And that is it! Load up a plate with all these beautiful French puffs with the sugar dripping off them!

Can I just say right here and now, that it smells so good! Please don’t wait for them to cool!

Grab a nice hot cup of coffee, after all you deserve this! You’ve been sweating it out in the kitchen dipping French puffs in butter and sugar!

Select the one that seems to be calling you.

The fork is just for decoration. You don’t need it.

Its like a cross between a doughnut, a muffin and a biscuit. It’s French… sorta.

You know what to do!

Perfect! There’s always room for one more…

Do you feel like we’re being watched?

These really are a fun treat, and for special occasions its a way to add a little extra touch that says “this moment, these people here are pretty special”. You mark that moment with a warm and sweet home baked treat, and you relish in the fact that this little part of the earth in the comfort of your kitchen rich with the aroma of spices and butter and fresh baked goodness is one of the nicest places you’ve ever been!

You see the smiles and the surprise in their eyes that you did this thing for them! “French puffs! For me? Really? That is awesome!” The coffee is poured, and there is laughter and grateful loved ones gobbling them down. And Saturday or Sunday is kicked off with a beautiful reminder that in this place people are valued and loved and treasured and maybe just a little bit spoiled. And who doesn’t love that?

And that makes you pretty sweet in anyone’s book!

Have a great week my friend!

I’ll be back Friday for another Fashion Friday!

Love Always,

Amy

    1. Thank you, Tachira! We make enough cupcakes and muffins at our house that I always keep my eyes open for extra cute ones! For this post, my husband was reaching for the normal pastel ones and I said, “Honey, I have some really cute ones, lets use those!” 🙂 Have a great day!
