Tasty Tuesday and Easy Spinach Dip

Hi Friends! It’s another Tasty Tuesday and today we have Easy Spinach Dip on the blog! With football season starting again, we all like having tasty snacks around when watching the game! So for the next few weeks, I am going to be sharing some snacks that are perfect for parties, and gathering around the tv to watch the game!

There is something so satisfying about Spinach Dip! It is so creamy and fulfilling! And it’s kind of one of those mystery dips that can seem like it might be hard but it really is not! So this week, that is what we are taking on! And without further ado, let’s begin!

Ingredients:

  • 1 16oz container of sour cream
  • 3/4 cup Hellmann’s mayonnaise
  • 1 10 oz box frozen chopped spinach, thawed
  • 1 envelope Knorr’s Vegetable Dip Mix
  • 1/2 can of water chestnuts drained/diced
  • 1 small bunch of green onions, sliced
  • 1 shake of Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 shake of garlic powder
  • 1 shake of onion powder
  • salt & pepper

In a bowl, add your sour cream, mayonnaise, Knorr’s Vegetable Dip Mix, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and a couple grinds of salt and pepper.

I used about 1/2 can of water chestnuts, drained.

Slice and then dice them.

Next let’s add the spinach. You are going to want to be sure your chopped frozen spinach is thawed.

It has a lot of water in it and you are going to want to drain it.

I took a paper towel and put in my strainer.

Then open the spinach and place inside the paper towel.

Holding the paper towel with the spinach in it over the strainer (in case your paper towel breaks) squeeze the water out of the spinach. There is so much water in there it is kind of surprising. Its like wringing out a really wet washcloth. Once it seems you have gotten most of the water out, take the spinach out of the paper towel. It’s pretty easy to handle at this point.

Chop your green onions. And add the water chestnuts, spinach and green onions to your mixture. I pull apart the spinach as I add it.

Stir it up, mixing well. You need to try and break up any large clumps of spinach.

Chill it for about 30 minutes.

One of my favorite ways to serve this dip is in a bread bowl. Your grocery will probably have round loaves of bread. Sourdough is one of my favorites to serve this with. Check this out, this bread is from Zingermans. Zingermans is this fantastic deli and restaurant in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I went to school at U of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and Zingermans was a real treat to get to go have a delicious sandwich or a bowl of soup with some of their bread! Well, now you can buy Zingermans bread right in our local grocery store!

And it is good!

Now you need to slice the bread in half, horizontally. You will be making a shallow bowl out of the bread to serve it in.

On the bottom half, use a spoon to help you scoop out the bread leaving a shallow bowl. The bread you scoop out is going to be served alongside the dip so people can use it to scoop up your delicious dip! I don’t know if you can see I have scooped it out below.

And now you see I filled it with the chilled spinach dip!

I put the pieces of torn up bread in another bowl, and also served it with veggies, and pretzels. These pretzels are like a flattened pretzel which makes them great to dip with.  You can also put the bread bowl on a platter and put the bread around it. But tonight I felt like paying homage to my beloved Michigan with this Michigan cutting board!

I added in some fruit to round it out, and help keep it a little healthier.

There are lots of different kinds of spinach dip, I really like this one, the crunch of the water chestnuts and the seasoning of the Knorr’s vegetable dip mix. You could easily use the light mayonnaise and reduced fat sour cream or even a plain Greek yogurt. If you really like spinach, you could use 2 boxes of it.

You can see I filled my little plate up! Yum! That crusty sour dough bread is so good with this dip!

You really are only using the one bowl to mix it up in, it is really an easy and fun dip to make and serve!

So spinach is one of those vegetables that can easily cause a “love it or leave it” kind of reaction. It originated in Persia. Catherine de Medici loved spinach. She was from Florentine, and it is said that most dishes that are “Florentine” have spinach in them for that reason.

Here in the United States, most of our spinach is grown in California. We all know which cartoon character derived his super power from spinach, Popeye! As Popeye became famous with kids, it actually impacted sales of spinach!

Now I confess, I can be a little finicky about spinach. But when its dressed in sour cream and mayonnaise, and spritzed up with water chestnuts and green onions, and served up with a hunk of crusty bread, well let’s just say I’m a believer! Spinach is healthy after all, and so any calories from the other ingredients get neutralized by the spinach. It’s practically a salad! Wink!

And there is nothing better than breaking bread and sharing a dip with friends and family! So as you gather to watch the game this weekend, now you have a solid recipe in your back pocket that should score a win for you no matter what!

Have a fantastic week!

I’ll be back this weekend with another post.

Love Always,

Amy

    1. Yay!!! Its really easy, the trick is draining that spinach. And my suggestion is to use the Hellman’s mayo. If you don’t like things super seasoned, just use the Knorr and leave the other seasonings out. I hope you love it!

  1. I could eat my weight in this dip! Yummy! Yummy! Yummy!!!! I love that you use brand name Hellman’s Mayo and Knorr soup mix. I think those ingredients need to be top shelf in order to get the best results. XO

I can’t wait to give this a try. I’ve made spinach dip in the past, but i’ve never added chestnuts OR worstershire! I’m gonna have to give it a try!
